Wow. 14+ inches of snow is heaped in mounds all around our city. It's almost comical to drive around and see the sometimes ingenious places that plow drivers have found to put their nemesis! Parking lots are just snow lots, with a few places left to park your car. Little children actually are finding the white stuff enjoyable, my nephews included! I don't remember seeing so much snow since we lived near Erie, PA!
The day it snowed, it was difficult to look out the window because of the brightness of the snow. It was weird to see the sun shining so brightly after such an incredible day of snow, wind and gloominess.
Looking at the snow reminded me of when I was a kid in school. More than one of my teachers through the years had us take a cup of snow into the school and let it melt to see the dirt that was actually in that beautiful snow. We never believed her until, of course, it melted. Apparently, that beautiful snow that floated down from the sky picked up particles of dirt and dust in the atmosphere and, by the time it hit earth....ewww...
Just now, though, I realized that I'm kind of like snow. I came from the heavens, beautiful, spotless and pure, but as I entered this atmosphere of mortals, I was no longer spotless. Even now, I can make it seem as though I am spotless from the outside, but I'm not fooling the Lord. He knows me. He knows my nature, my thoughts, my desires.
In Psalms 51, David is talking to God and asking for forgiveness after his affair with Bathsheba. He says, "Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me and I will be white as snow."
Amazing that God is even willing to cleanse us after so many times we absolutely break His heart....after so many times of allowing our snow-white veneers to be melted down until our dirty insides are visible. Why?! Plow drivers around here probably had just a small glimpse of what it is like to be God. They would no sooner get the snow moved than look back to see it had piled up again! God cleanses our sins, we promise to never do it again....and then, whoops!, here we are again!
"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation...." (vs. 10-12a)
I am so glad that I serve an understanding God. He knows my potential, forgives my failures and loves me through it all. No one in my life is that understanding....and my family and friends are pretty great. So, my goal for today? Shoot for the stars. Even if I miss, I fall amongst the stars. I'm going to do my best. I'm going to ask forgiveness when necessary. And, no matter what, I'm going to be surrounded by God and His host of angels!
With that, I shall sleep in peace tonite! Sweet Dreams!
